NFHP (National Fish Habitat Partnership)

The Desert Fish Habitat Partnership is one of 20 regional Fish Habitat Partnerships that work across all U.S. states and in the territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  DFHP was recognized by the NFHP Board in 2009.

The National Fish Habitat Partnership (NFHP) is a collaborative conservation initiative established under Chapter 101 of Title 16 of the U.S. Code, as authorized by the America’s Conservation Enhancement (ACE) Act. Through science-based, locally driven partnerships, NFHP unites federal, state, Tribal, and local stakeholders to protect, restore, and enhance fish habitats across the United States

NFHP’s Mission is to protect, restore and enhance the nation’s fish and aquatic communities through partnerships that foster fish habitat conservation and improve the quality of life for the American people.

NFHP’s Goals, guided by the National Fish Habitat Action Plan,  are to:

  • Protect and maintain intact and healthy aquatic systems

  • Prevent further degradation of fish habitats that have been adversely affected

  • Reverse declines in the quality and quantity of aquatic habitats to improve the overall health of fish and other aquatic organisms

  • Increase the quality and quantity of fish habitats that support a broad natural diversity of fish and other aquatic species

From 2021-2025 NFHP supported 434 projects across 46 states, investing $27 million in NFHP funds, matched by $93.6 million in non-federal contributions, and bolstered by an additional $50 million in leveraged resources. These investments, leveraging three private dollars for every public dollar invested (3:1), reflect the strength of public-private collaboration and the shared commitment to aquatic resource stewardship.

NFHP’s most recent Status Report to Congress on program activities and accomplishments is available here.

The Projects and Accomplishment Dashboard allows you to explore project locations via an interactive map. You can view details about individual projects and summaries of NFHP accomplishments using various filters such as project year, location (e.g., state, congressional district), and focus (e.g., species or habitats).
